The beautiful, translucent green glass from Herat, found in Western Afghanistan, is a tradition handed from father to son for generations. There are only a few craftsmen in Herat that produce this glass. In the past, Herati glassmakers crafted ornaments using quartz and flint. But since the advent of industrialized glass production, the Herati glass factory has begun to use chemicals and remains of broken glass appliances in order to stay in the market. The craftsmen recycle particles of broken glass to ensure they have enough raw materials. The recycled glass is used to make cups, vases, plates and other home items.

The inspiration for Beshtar comes from the resilience of a people living in a country that has been at war for more than 30 years. All the products used in the collections are textiles and items taken from everyday life in Afghanistan and reinterpreted in a modern and contemporary fashion. The profits from the Beshtar's collection go towards various charity's that work for women's empowerment, education, vocational training etc. The charities supported by Beshtar are Zaher Shah Foundation, AWEC, Gardens For Life and Aschiana.
